Kevin Bacon is an authority on the music industry – both past, present and future. Combining a mix of music creation as both a recording artist and record producer with technology and strategy.
As a founder member of the Comsat Angels he recorded 9 albums in 10 years from 1980 to 1990 released on Polydor, Jive / BMG and Island. It was during the latter period that a dialog with Chris Blackwell led to the building of Axis Studios in Sheffield, which became the hub of creativity leading not only to Brit and Grammy award winning albums but also artist development and the formation of publishing and record companies. Production credits include David Bowie, Ian Brown, Sugababes, Lighthouse Family, Ian Brown amongst many many more.
In 2004 Kevin formed AWAL (Artists Without A Label) alongside Denzyl Feigelson. A groundbreaking digital music platform for all and very artist based upon an artist friendly contract never seen before. With modest ambitions it grew rapidly however following the first release by the Arctic Monkeys. By the time AWAL was acquired by Kobalt in 2011 it over 3,500 clients, 6,500 artists, 300,000 tracks – most notably Radiohead.
In 2008 Buzzdeck was launched – the first dedicated music analytics tool featuring sales and social media giving artists access to iTunes, Spotify and Amazon Digital sales alongside almost every social statistic available. Clients included Atlantic / Warner UK, Sony Music, PIAS, Concorde US and raft of management companies such as RocNation. Buzzdeck was acquired by Federation X / Music2Be in 2014.
Kevin has consulted with Island Records in A&R for Nick Gatfield. From 2011 to 2014, following the acquisition, Kevin consulted with Kobalt as Head of Innovation forming the strategies on Analytics, Youtube and Streaming. From late 2014 Kevin consulted for The Cutting Edge Group as Creative Technology Director with a focus on music technology and a broader future strategy. More recently Kevin consults for the PRS on strategy and innovation.
Most importantly, Kevin is dedicated to learning and solving – growing capabilities and connections.
Kevin has his own consulting company – Kevin Bacon Un Limited.
Although he shares a name with the actor they are not related BUT has got to know him over the years and did a panel together at SXSW 2014.
Kevin still co-owns a huge studio at RAK in London full of vintage equipment and instruments.
Kevin loves technology – any technology – as long as it does something cool.
Kevin loves travel but not hotels. Lives in London.
Biographies are really weird things. About pages. All that. You basically have to primp yourself up and act all pompous and important and make sure people know why you’re worth it. What I’ve side stepped here is my education – I never had one beyond the age of 17.
